Master of Theological Studies

Expand your mind, deepen your understanding.

Candler’s Master of Theological Studies (MTS) is a two-year degree designed for those who wish to explore theology and religion from an academic perspective. Its academically demanding and flexible curriculum is especially suited for those interested in some aspect of teaching, research or engagement in social issues and public policy. The MTS program may be undertaken as preparatory work for a doctoral program in religion, as an avenue to work in a related profession, such as law, journalism, ethics, or nonprofit administration—or to satisfy an intellectual curiosity about religion.

Dual Degree Opportunities

MTS students may pursue dual degrees in bioethics, business, law, and public health.

Pitts Theology Library

Girl studying in library

With more than 610,000 volumes, Pitts Theology Library is one of the premier theology libraries in North America—and an important partner in helping you get the most out of your Candler education. Our facilities are top-notch (high density shelving, small group study spaces, an 80-seat lecture hall, an exhibit gallery), and our staff is even better. The majority of Pitts reference librarians have studied theology themselves; most hold PhDs or are currently writing their dissertations. They are eager to help you engage with the rich resources at Candler and Emory. Meet with them to talk about a project, or attend a weekly workshop on topics ranging from how to research to how to create a sharp presentation. This is more than a library; this is a place that serves both your educational and vocational goals.
